In this article, I will introduce two tricky ways for you to add or change your profile pictures/avatars in Microsoft Outlook at ease.

Add or change the profile picture/avatar with adding contact picture

This method will guide you to change your profile picture/avatar with creating a new contact, and then adding a picture/avatar for this new contact in Microsoft Outlook.

Step 1: Shift to the Contact view with click the Contact (or People) in the Navigation Pane.

Step 2: Create a new contact:

  1. In Outlook 2007, please click the File > New > Contact;
  2. In Outlook 2010 and 2013, please click the New Contact on the Home tab.

Step 3: In the new Contact window, fill your profile references in according fields, and then click the Picture > Add Picture on the Contact tab. See screen shot:

Step 4: In the popping Add Contact Picture dialog box, find out and select your profile picture/avatar, and click the OK button.

Step 5: Complete the new contact creating, and then click the Save & Close button in the Contact window.

Note:
(1). With this method, you can view the added or changed profile picture in People Pane when you reading messages in Outlook 2010 and 2013. However, other exchange users are not possible to view your profile picture/avatar.
(2). You can also add profile picture/avatar to the contact you have already created before with the Step 3 and Step 4 above.

Add or change the profile picture/avatar via Outlook Web App

This method will guide you to add or change the profile picture for your exchange account via Outlook Web App on internet.

Step 1: Log in the Outlook Web App with your exchange account.

Note: You can quick access the Outlook Web App with clicking the File > Info, ensuring the exchange account is selected under the Account Information, and then clicking the hyperlink besides the Account Settings button.

Step 2: Click your exchange account name at the upper-right corner, and then click the Change below the blank/original profile image/avatar. See screen shot:

Step 3: In the new opening web page, please click the Browse button.

Step 4: Then the File dialog box pops out. Find out and select your profile photo/avatar in this dialog box, and click the Open button.

Step 5: It will take some time to upload your profile image/avatar. After uploading, please click the Save button. See screen shot:

Step 6: Exit your Outlook Web App.

Then you will see your profile photo in the People Pane when viewing emails in Microsoft Outlook 2013 and 2010. What's more, your profile photo/avatar is visible for other exchange users when they receive your emails in Microsoft Outlook 2013 and 2010. See screen shot:

Note: In some cases, you may not be able to view the profile picture uploaded from the Outlook Web App in Microsoft Outlook immediately. Anyway, the profile picture will be visible in several days.

      If your email account is an exchange account, when you upload a profile picture on Outlook web, the profile picture will be added to your Outlook desktop automatically.

    Most of these options are not available to me. I have some 'clean' modern version or outlook. I have no picture options when creating contacts. Help please.

Microsoft Exchange Account can provide some additional functionality for users, just as use Cached Exchange Mode to make your Outlook efficiency. Therefore, you can see how to add or setup Exchange Account to Outlook 2007/2010/2013/2016 manually.

Part 1: Add Exchange Account to Outlook 2007

Step 1: Close your Outlook and go to Control Panel window. Click the down arrow next to View by at the top-right corner then click on Mail.

Step 2: When the Mail Setup window pop-ups, click E-mail Accounts button.

Step 3: Under E-mail tab, click on 'New...'

Step 4: Check 'Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP' option then Next.

Step 5: Tick the checkbox front 'Manually configure server settings or additional server types'.

Step 6: Choose Microsoft Exchange to set up.

Step 7: Input your Microsoft Exchange server and the User Name as the image below. Then click on More Settings at the lower-right corner.

Note: Check Use Cached Exchange Mode under Microsoft Exchange server. If you want to turn it on later, refer to Enable or Disable Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook, this will take just one or two minutes to accomplish.

Step 8: Go to Connection tab, check on Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP and tap on Exchange Proxy Settings.

Step 9: Input URL behind 'https://' then check the 'Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate' option. Tick the following items:

  • On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP
  • On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP

At the bottom of window select Basic Authentication, click OK.

Step 10: Then you will be back to Microsoft Exchange window, click on Apply then OK. Type your password with the username to finish adding Exchange Account Outlook 2007.

Part 2: Setup Microsoft Exchange Account Outlook 2010/2013/2016

Step 1: In the Control Panel window, click the Email.

Step 2: Click on Show Profiles in Mail Setup-outlook 2010 window.

Step 3: Click on Add to Create New Profile. Set the file name and click OK.

Step 4: Click Manually configure server settings or additional server types then click Next to continnue.

Step 5: Tick the 'Microsoft Exchange or compatible service' option.

Step 5: Type your Server and User Name, click on More Settings. Remember to check the Use Cached Exchange Mode.

Step 6: In the Security section, under the 'Logon network security' section, select Anonymous Authentication.

Step 7: Go to Connection tab, check Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP and tap on Exchange Proxy Settings.

Step 8: Behind 'https://' you can input the URL in the field. Then check the following options:

  • Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate
  • On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP
  • On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP

After that, select the Basic Authentication under Proxy authentication settings.

Step 9: Tap on OK to return the Microsoft Exchange window, click on Apply then OK.

Step 10: Now click 'Next' in the Add New Account window, input your account and username to log in your Exchange account. Now you have setup Exchange Account in Outlook.
