When I received my Baofeng UV-5R, I also received a programming cable so I downloaded the free CHIRP software for programming the HT. When I looked at all the radio options, I saw it also programmed the three other radios that I also have, The Kenwood TM-281, Yaesu 857, and FT-8900.

I ordered the cable for the FT-8900 and learned how to program the radio using the Chirp software.

When I first ordered the cable to program the Yaesu FT-8900R, I didn’t realize just how to work it. So, like I do with my Kenwood and Baofeng, I plugged in the cable and turned on the radio…..

The Yaesu doesn’t work that way. The radio immediately went into transmit until I turned it off again!

I returned the cable as defective and ordered another one. When I received it, the new cable did the same thing. Then I talked to another ham on one of the local repeaters who corrected me in how to use it.

To put the 8900 into clone mode, you have to
turn off the radio,
plug in the cable, then,
while pushing and holding the V/M button,
- turn it on.
Rotate the right frequency knob until you see
- “Clone Start”
Press the Menu Key
- (the small square button in the middle)

The first time you use a radio with Chirp, you have to have Chirp download from the radio.

In chirp,

Select “Radio”

“Download from Radio”

Choose the correct COM port

Choose “Yaesu” for Vendor

Choose FT-8900 for the radio.

This is where your timing is critical. It takes practice…. You only have about 1/2 to 1 second to press both buttons

In Chirp, press OK

THEN

On they 8900, press V/M immediately after.

…. and wait…………

My desktop (not the fastest computer in the world) takes 3 to 5 minutes to transfer to and from the Yaesu.

It works much more quickly on my Kenwood TM-281 and Baofeng radios which only have up to 127 memory locations, but the 8900 has 800 memory locations, so it takes 5 to 8 times as long to transfer.

I have a copy of ADMS software for programming the Yaesus, but it is so old, it is on a floppy. I don’t have a floppy or a CD drive, so I can’t use it.

Chirp doesn’t allow you to change any specialty frequencies such as the Hyper-Memories and range frequencies, but those can easily be set by hand on the radio.

One of the best features I like about Chirp is it’s ability to download frequencies from RepeaterBook.com. It has a proximity setting, so I set it to 75 miles and downloaded all repeaters. The frequencies, offsets and tone requirements were all added in just seconds.

Afterwards, I checked each of the repeaters early in the morning while propagation was still good and deleted the ones I couldn’t hit.

Because it has so many memories available, I also included all the FRS, GMRS, MURS, and WX frequencies so I can monitor any of them as desired.

Because this radio banks the memories so I can scan certain groups, I can program the local public service frequencies into one section and the ham into another. I can choose which bank to scan so I it’s pretty versatile.

I need the programming software for the Baofeng UV-7R or if it can be programmed under another name or model.

We bought quite a few of these radio's now and need to program them and to manually program 102 channels into
80 radios is quite a issue.

Was this ever solved? I have just bought a UV-7R and cant get it working with chirp at all. Please let me know?

This looks like another one of many so-called 'waterproof' radios. CHIRP already programs them. Try GT-3WP, UV-82WP or Retevis RT6.
